The Canadian Human Rights Commission has released A Guide for Managing the Return to Work. It tells us that at any given time, between 8% and 12% of Canada's workplace is absent due to illness or disability. The Commission also notes that, among the factors contributing to the "growing rates of prolonged employee absenteeism" are stress related to technological change and organizational restructuring, an aging workforce that is more susceptible to long-term illness and difficulties balancing work and family responsibilities.
The Guide has three sections:
- Key legal principles which includes a discussion of discrimination, the duty to accommodate and privacy
- A step-by-step guideline for managing the return to work
- Case studies
This really is a helpful resource and worth reading.
