As mentioned here, Bill 118 came into effect on October 26, 2009 but there was a 3 month grace period during which the police would "educate" but not ticket drivers that were offside the law.
The grace period is up today (February 1, 2010) and those who text and drive, use hand-held cell phones behind the wheel or who are in contravention of the law will receive a ticket. The police also have the discretion to lay other charges as they deem appropriate in the circumstances (e.g. dangerous driving, careless driving among others). The Globe has an article as does CBC.ca.
Employers need to be mindful of this law which has received a lot of publicity, and should come as no surprise to anyone.
