On this day we reflect on the tremendous sacrifices that our veterans (and their families) have made. Veteran Affairs Canada has published a booklet entitled A Day of Remembrance that is well worth the read.
On this Remembrance Day my thoughts focus on my great uncle, Myron Clarence (“Pokey”) Harrington who was killed over Hamburg, Germany on October 9, 1943 when the bomber on which he was an air gunner was shot down. He was only 30 years of age (the oldest member of the plane’s crew - all were killed). I have heard a few stories about him, but at 30 and with the passage of time, not too many stories have survived, which is truly sad.
He, and his crew mates are buried in Becklingen War Cemetery located in the village of Becklingen, North of Hamburg (here is a photo of his grave from the terrific organization - The Maple Leaf Legacy Project).
